FWS commissioned Daelim Transformer to design and manufacture a high voltage substation as part of the expansion of the Richardson International Canola Crush facility in Yorkton, SK. The project necessitated the delivery of two pad-mounted transformers, with capacities of 2 MVA and 5 MVA, respectively.

The local transformer suppliers in North America were unable to meet the project’s tight delivery schedule. After a comprehensive evaluation of Daelim Transformer’s production capabilities, quality control processes, and positive references from North American clients, FWS selected Daelim Transformer for this critical project. Daelim Transformer was able to provide transformers with Canadian approvals within the required timelines.

DESIGN INNOVATIONS

The transformers for this project featured a specialized design to accommodate unique project requirements. Unlike standard pad-mounted transformers, which are typically bottom-in, this project required a top-in design. Additionally, the design included a bracket on the top of the oil tank to facilitate the installation of a grounding resistor cabinet. Key design elements include:

  • Junction Box: A junction box was incorporated on the top of the low-voltage compartment, allowing for high and low voltage cables to enter the transformer from the top for easy connection.
  • Grounding Resistor Cabinet Installation: Brackets and studs were designed on the top of the high-voltage compartment to ensure straightforward installation of the grounding resistor cabinet.

These transformers were designed in compliance with the CSA C227.5 standard and are of the live-front type. The design drawings were completed and delivered to the customer within one week for confirmation.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

Both transformers were manufactured, tested, and delivered within a 16-week timeframe. The customer received the transformers two weeks after production, and the installation process proceeded smoothly. The transformers were successfully powered on and are currently operating safely.
