What is a substation?

A substation is a place in the power system that converts voltage and current and receives and distributes electrical energy.

The substation in the power plant is a step-up substation, and its function is to boost the power generated by the generator and feed it to the high-voltage grid.

There are 4 classes of substation:

(1) Class I of substations. Refers to AC UHV stations, nuclear power, large-scale energy bases (3 million kW and above) outsourcing, and cross-regional (North China, Central China, East China, Northeast China, Northwest China) liaison 750/500/330kV substations.

(2) Class II substations. Refers to other than Class I substations, 750/500/330kV substations, substations outside the power plant (1,000,000 kW and above, 3,000,000 kW), and inter-provincial liaison 220kV substations, the main transformer or bus is out of service, the switch refuses to operate Substations that cause grid events of level 4 and above.

(3) Class III of substations. Refers to 220kV substations other than Category II, substations outside the power plant (300,000 kW and above, and below 1,000,000 kW), and substations where the main transformer or busbar is out of service, and the switch refuses to actuate and causes a five-level power grid event. Substations that directly supply power to important users.

(4) Class IV of substations. Refers to 35kV and above substations other than Category I, II, and III.

There is also a substation: a skid-mounted portable substation is also called Prefabricated Substation. Installation and disassembly are very simple, and they can also be used repeatedly. It is a movable substation.

What equipment is in the substation?

1. Primary equipment

Primary equipment refers to the equipment that directly produces, transmits, distributes, and uses electrical energy, mainly including power transformer, high-voltage circuit breakers, isolating switches, bus bars, arresters, capacitors, reactors, etc.

2. Secondary equipment

The secondary equipment of the substation refers to the equipment that measures, monitors, controls, and protects the operating conditions of the primary equipment and systems. A DC device that supplies power to the secondary device.

Why power transformer is used in a substation?

A power transformer is a static electrical device that is used to convert a certain value of AC voltage (current) into another or several different values of voltage (current) with the same frequency.

Power Transformer
Power transformers are one of the main equipment in power plants and substations. The function of the transformer is multi-faceted. It can not only increase the voltage to send electric energy to the electricity-consuming area, but also reduce the voltage to the voltage used at all levels to meet the needs of electricity consumption. In short, both step-up and step-down must be completed by the transformer. In the process of transmitting electrical energy in the power system, two losses of voltage and power will inevitably occur. When the same power is transmitted, the voltage loss is inversely proportional to the voltage, and the power loss is inversely proportional to the square of the voltage. The use of transformers to increase the voltage reduces transmission losses.

Which transformer is used in the power subtation?

Substation Power Transformers are mainly used in power substation.

Which-transformer-is-used-in-the-power-subtation
There are many types of transformers, which can be divided into dry-type transformers and oil-immersed transformers according to the cooling medium; according to the installation method, they can be divided into column-mounted transformers, pad-mounted transformers, and substation transformers. Mainly used in substations are substation-type transformers, usually oil-immersed.

High-voltage power transformers are mainly used in substations of 69kV and above; dry transformers and small oil transformers are mainly used in substations of 35kV and below; Pad-mounted transformers and mini substation transformers are mainly used in a skid-mounted portable substation.

There are two main cooling methods for oil-immersed transformers, ONAN and ONAF. ONAN is self-cooling without fan; ONAF is air cooling with fan. Due to the large power consumption in the substation, the required transformer capacity is also larger, so most of them are ONAF cooling methods with fans.

The protection system of the substation transformer

Since the main transformer is the core equipment of the substation, the safety of the main transformer is also the most important. Let's take a look at the main protection measures. The protection measures of the main transformer are mainly divided into main protection and backup protection.

Primary Protection System:

1. Gas protection, when it has the function of on-load voltage regulation, it includes two parts: the main gas and the on-load gas. Generally, the heavy gas acts on tripping, and the light gas reports a signal.

2. Transformer longitudinal connection differential protection generally adopts three-phase type.

Backup Protection System:

The backup protection is used to protect the transformer when the main protection fails to act.

Generally includes:

1. Overcurrent protection for high-voltage side composite voltage startup;

2. Over-current protection for low-voltage side composite voltage startup;

3. Zero-sequence current and zero-sequence voltage protection against external grounding short circuit;

4. Overload protection to prevent symmetrical overload;

5. Protection associated with the high-voltage side busbar: differential protection of the high-voltage side busbar, circuit breaker failure protection;

6. Relevant protection associated with the low-voltage side busbar: differential protection of the low-voltage side busbar, etc.
