What does a transformer on a power line look like?

A transformer on a power line can either look like cylindrical metal with wires running in and out mounted on poles or towers; this type of transformer is called utility pole transformer or pole-mounted transformer.

It could also look like a metal cabinet on a sidewalk resting on concrete support or base. This type of transformer is called a pad-mounted transformer.

These transformers can either be single-phase or three-phase. Transformers with a capacity lower than 250 kVA come in single-phase.

Daelim Transformer specializes in single-phase pad-mounted and pole-mounted transformers but is also very capable of producing three-phase transformers up to 240 MVA and has successfully delivered large projects around the world.

What are inside powerline transformers?

Inside a power line transformer are its metalcore, wire windings, and oil. All have a different role for the transformer to perform its function in the system.

The metalcore provides a path for magnetic flux, this path should have the lowest resistance to avoid losses and to get maximum efficiency.

The wire windings are composed of primary and secondary windings where the main activity of transforming energy happens. It can either step up or step down depending on the winding's orientation.

The process of transforming energy involves handling high voltages and power that release a high amount of heat.

The basic transformers cool themselves naturally but other transformers infuse oil as their cooling medium and forced ventilation using cooling fans.

How much does a powerline transformer cost?

A powerline transformer's cost depends on various factors. First is its capacity ratings. Next is how much voltage it can handle, the cooling system that it has, its impedance, the withstand voltage, and many others.

A basic assembly of a utility pole transformer could cost around $3000 to $20000. It could be higher or lower depending on the amount of power it can handle.

This cost does not include the pole and other accessories like the capacitor, lightning arrester, the meter. The cost might also be higher or lower depending on the specified requirement, technical standards, or compliance needed for certain industries.

Let’s talk about your requirements. Daelim can always customize transformers according to ANSI/IEEE, CSA, AS/AZS, DOE, NEMA, IEC, GOST, and other international standards. Consult our experts at www.daelimtransformer.com.

How does a power line transformer work?

A power line would not be complete without a good transformer. The transformer can function as a regulator that receives and transforms a large amount of energy into a smaller portion before serving it to a distribution system or to a certain facility.

It functions as a distribution engine that delivers fine-tuned energy to consumers that are of lower voltage yet powerful enough to run devices and equipment without frying them.

A transformer can also be used by individual industries that have specific voltage requirements for their instrument, it could be higher or lower than the regular power supply.

The transformer then adjusts voltage according to whatever voltage demand. Technically these transformers are called step-up or step-down transformers.

Tap changer can make the transformer have 5-7 steps of voltage regulation range (can also be more).

How much copper is in a power line transformer?

The amount of copper in a transformer is largely dependent on its type. For example, a typical dry-type transformer can contain copper 30% up to 35% of its mass while the oil-type transformers can have 20% copper.

Another factor would be the rated capacity, amperage and voltage, how many windings it has, and the magnetic flux of the material being used. The larger the capacity, the more copper is used.

What do transformers on power lines do?

Transformer on power line does:

  • Improve voltage levels to minimize transmission losses.
  • Receives high voltage and transforms it to lower voltage suitable for utility use.
  • Adjust voltage to different levels to serve varying power requirements.
  • Helps take care of your prized possessions by regulating the voltage supply.
  • Part of the safety measures that are installed on each power pole is to avoid accidents and fire.

What happens when a transformer blows up?

A transformer can blow up for various reasons. This can either be because of internal damage or external issues that hit the transformer.

Here are the following scenarios that could happen when a transformer blows up:

  • Expect to hear a loud banging sound from the power line transformer explosion.
  • Depending on the severity, the transformer could spark and produce a flame.
  • Produce flashes of bluish-green lights.
  • Produce a cloud of smoke in the surrounding area.
  • Power goes down.

These scenarios are very common but it is not the transformer’s fault. Well, in fact, the transformer is just doing its job. Power goes down as it automatically turns off all power supply to avoid further damage.

Once a power line transformer explosion happens, immediately call your service provider and do not go near the area. Electric service providers usually make inspections and replace damaged transformers up front.

Transformers could blow up for the following reasons:

  • Lightning strikes, lightning carries a very high amount of power that a transformer could not handle causing it to explode.
  • It is being ignited by another fire that originated outside the transformer.
  • Wrong transformer sizing.
  • Poor design and construction.
  • Overheating and short circuit load.
  • Poor maintenance
  • It has reached its service life.

How long to restore power after the transformer blows?

A transformer can easily be repaired or replaced but it would still depend on how severe the damage is.

The repair can take less than an hour but a severe case could take a day or even months depending on the capability and experience of your service provider.

What is the fluid in a power pole transformer?

The fluid inside a power pole transformer is oil. This oil serves as an insulating material and it also functions as a cooling medium.

This is only found on transformers that are wet-type transformers often called oil-filled transformers.

Dry-type transformers are designed to cool down naturally and do not need oil or external accessories to cool down.

There are different types of transformer oil, this includes:

Naphthenic Oils

This transformer oil has a high boiling point that is around 425°C. It is known to contain negligible to low wax levels which helps it remain fluid even at very low temperatures.

Another notable characteristic of naphthenic oil is that it contributes to a better distribution of heat, lowering the possibility of overheating which helps extend the life of a transformer unit.

Paraffinic Oils

This transformer oil has a high boiling point at 530°C, higher than naphthenic oil. The oxidation rate of this transformer oil is low. It is derived from crude oil and thus contains a high level of wax.

Silicon Oils

This transformer oil is synthetic that is mainly made of siloxane polymers making it thermally stable. Its strength is that it naturally has a high flash point which makes it a preferred transformer oil for installation near the danger zone and specific locations where fire safety is the main concern.

Bio-based Oils

Rising environmental issues lead to the arrival of bio-based transformer oils. Unlike most transformer oils that are petroleum derivatives, this oil is sourced and made from vegetable oils.

It is biodegradable and does not contain toxic chemicals. Any spillage or waste oil at the end of the transformer life with bio-based transformer oils is considered environmentally safe.  It also possesses a higher fire point than traditional mineral oil.

Daelim Belefic has its own variety of transformer oils. Customers can have an option to have mineral oil(inhibited or not inhibited) or special vegetable oil which is a natural ester(FR3 Enviro Temp, RAPO and etc).

These oils are laboratory tested to confirm with ASTMD-3487/2002 / IEC 60296 / IEEE C57.106-2002 / IEC 60422. It is enclosed in a reinforced leak-free oil tank.

What happens when a power line transformer is overloaded?

Overloading will not instantly blow up a transformer except if it's poorly manufactured. However, due to the increased load, the transformer will overheat.

This can also result in a low voltage supply and higher currents that can damage electrical devices if the system does not have a circuit breaker.

If a transformer is designed well it can sustain the heat and cools itself once the load is back to normal. In some cases, overloading can cause the transformer to spark and frequent overloading can also shorten the transformer's life.

Conclusion

Power line transformers are vital in energizing homes, businesses, and infrastructures. Without it, it would be impossible for power grids to operate safely.

It is one of the greatest inventions that brought light to the world, especially in hard-to-reach places. With power line transformers, we are now enjoying access to safe electricity.

With its own manufacturing facility, Daelim Belefic Transformers is committed to continuing to supply superior quality power line transformers to serve your energy needs.
