What Is the 75 kVA Transformer?

The 75 kVA transformer is a static device that converts electrical energy to various levels. Normally converting high-voltage with low-current energy form to a usable low-voltage with high-current energy form.

Comprised not less than two coils winding around a shared common core. As soon as electrical energy is introduced to the primary coil, a magnetic field is created that pushes electrical current to the secondary coil.

75kva 1 phase transformerThe resulting current is then ready and safe to use for various applications which include:

Supply of power for household use.

Powering small to medium voltage devices.

Fit industrial equipment with special voltage requirements.

Protect power lines and devices from being damaged in case of abnormal electrical upsurge.

What Size Wire For 75 kVA Transformer?

The 75kVA transformer wire size is mainly determined according to the current size of the primary and secondary voltage sides. The greater the current, the greater the size of the wire.

To determine the wire size, we need to look over the Maximum Rating or Setting of Overcurrent Protection for Transformer Table 450.3(B) first. According to the table, for currents, 9 Amps above should take 125% (Primary & secondary protection).

For example with a three-phase 75 kVA transformer having 480V as primary voltage. When lookup Table 2.0, it will have a 90.2 Amps full load Amps.

Multiply that by the primary and secondary protection recommended and the result would be 112.75 Amps or 113 Amps. According to the standards stated in Table 310.15(B)(16) and the rule stated in 240.4(B), it will require 115A ampacity.

With that, it will have the recommended wire size for a 75 kVA transformer which is a 2 AWG copper conductor considering normal or standard conditions.
